On the way to church one Sunday, I noticed a muddy road sign (yes, I can be quite observant at times).  I almost had the urge to jump out and wipe it off (key word = almost), and then wondered, is there anyone who actually does that for a job?  Would the signs be more clear if they were squeegeed every month or so?  ("Wow--did you see that bridge abutment sign--it just sort of popped out at me!").  My next thought was, what if--during the night--all road signs were removed?  Would we notice it the next day?  ("Hey--wasn't there a yield sign here yester--watch out!")

We usually give most of our attention to the little round red, yellow, and green lights and the flashing arrows.  We sometimes ignore (or pretend we don't see) signs like the big numbers on the side of the road, or the blue ones in the empty parking spots right near the store entrance.  Others, like the one announcing the river you may cross twice a day for work are right outside our radar screen (though I hope we'd notice if the bridge was gone).

God's Word is full of signs to keep us on the right path in our Christian walk, whether we heed them, choose to ignore them, or just plain don't know they are there.  Pastors are called to carefully, courageously, and patiently point them out to us (occasionally unpleasant though that may be for both sides!).  The Lord may use others in our lives as well (a family member, a close friend, or even an enemy or two) to bring something to our attention.  As we read the Lord's Word on our own, let's ask Him to show us the signs through His correction, rebuke, and encouragement.  Whatever path He has opened for us, we want to stay on it.

"Preach the Word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all song-suffering and doctrine."  2 Timothy 4:2
