And on That Note...

While we're on the topic of robins, I have inferred a few things about these humble creatures.

I looked up a site about robins, and it set me up for a field study under the title, "Get to Know Your Robin" (complete with a date record plan).  Alas, I must  to leave the field study to someone else and tend to my own nest at present, but it left me with questions to consider:

-How much do robins songs/calls vary at different times in a day?  To me, this indicated that they must.  How much do our songs/calls vary, and Who is there to hear every one?    "And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear." Isa 65:24

-Do songs/calls vary between individuals?  I'm assuming that they do, or they would not have asked.  Imagine what it must be like to the Lord, Who hears the collective cries of our hearts, yet knows each one of us by name and is interested in each facet of our sometimes intricate needs.    "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."
Rom 8:26

-Is there a difference between male and female songs/calls? (Maybe this is your favorite question).  Again, I assumed that there must be.  Though men and women will never totally understand each other here on earth (and may be driven crazy in the effort), the Lord--in His amazing wisdom and maybe some humor-- has created us differently to complement the other, so He is the only One Who understands both kinds of calls! (I'm guessing the females sing the longest).

"The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.  He will fulfil the desire of them that fear Him: He also will hear their cry, and will save them."            Ps 145:18-19

Singing is for the Birds

"Wake up--hurry--come to the window!  The robins first song of the morning begins in 5 min.--you won’t want to miss it!"

First words out of your mouth of a morning?  Probably not.  And I’m sure the only response you'd get to that would be a pillow in your face.

When you are awake at, say...4 a.m., you're either trying to get back to sleep (in which case the pillow goes over your own head) or you're stumbling around trying to get ready for the day, and "listen to robin's song" is way down your list of "Things to do when I am blasted out of bed by my alarm at 4 a.m.".

I recently learned-- from a reliable source-- that robins actually have several morning songs.  The two that you may hear are appropriately named the “robin’s song” and the “dawn song” (a more “animated and excited” call, according to Lang Elliot, bird vocalization authority).

Songs of praise....from robins....at 4 a.m.

Isn't that just like the Lord, to show so much care for those simple birds that He would use them as examples to us!  Do we not have much more to sing about than they, yet how often do we wake up with praise in our mouths?

“I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised:”      Psalm 18:3

My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD;in the morning will I direct my prayer unto Thee, and will look up”.        Psalm 5:3

Sign Here

On the way to church one Sunday, I noticed a muddy road sign (yes, I can be quite observant at times).  I almost had the urge to jump out and wipe it off (key word = almost), and then wondered, is there anyone who actually does that for a job?  Would the signs be more clear if they were squeegeed every month or so?  ("Wow--did you see that bridge abutment sign--it just sort of popped out at me!").  My next thought was, what if--during the night--all road signs were removed?  Would we notice it the next day?  ("Hey--wasn't there a yield sign here yester--watch out!")

We usually give most of our attention to the little round red, yellow, and green lights and the flashing arrows.  We sometimes ignore (or pretend we don't see) signs like the big numbers on the side of the road, or the blue ones in the empty parking spots right near the store entrance.  Others, like the one announcing the river you may cross twice a day for work are right outside our radar screen (though I hope we'd notice if the bridge was gone).

God's Word is full of signs to keep us on the right path in our Christian walk, whether we heed them, choose to ignore them, or just plain don't know they are there.  Pastors are called to carefully, courageously, and patiently point them out to us (occasionally unpleasant though that may be for both sides!).  The Lord may use others in our lives as well (a family member, a close friend, or even an enemy or two) to bring something to our attention.  As we read the Lord's Word on our own, let's ask Him to show us the signs through His correction, rebuke, and encouragement.  Whatever path He has opened for us, we want to stay on it.

"Preach the Word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all song-suffering and doctrine."  2 Timothy 4:2
