Laryngitically Speaking...
"So, what is your laryngitis article going to be about?" my daughter asked (after not listening to me for almost a week, she knows an article idea when she hears it).
Communication (or lack thereof)-especially with one's voice-gives pause for much thought. So, since my mind and fingers work, here are some of them:
-if you have to answer the phone, there may be awkward silences and nervous laughter on the other end of the line
-you begin to think about some people who should have laryngitis
-you begin to wonder how many people wish that you had developed it sooner
-when you are able to squeak out a few words, each one of them is chosen with care
-armed with a sign language book, pen and paper, it's amazing how much you can communicate) I feel like I am preparing for the National Charades Bee)
-daughter became quite good at "interpreting" m facial and hand "language"
-I really missed talking to my husband (though his ears had a little 'spring break')
-you can be slogging along with a cold, and others may never notice: lose your voice, however, and suddenly everyone thinks you're at death's door, even when you're feeling fine
-though it's kind of fun at first, you quickly get tired of it
-family members feel that they are speaking WAY TOO LOUDLY as they carry on their 1-sided conversations with you
-family members begin to feel as if they are speaking to a brick wall
-family members realize they must simply keep talking through the "Mom speaks here" pauses
-my daughter observed how much you take your talking for granted
-she also observed how much others take your talking for granted
-she also said it's like playing the "jinx" game that kids sometimes play (where one person can't speak until the other one does)
-she also said it's like playing the "silent game" that women sometimes play (especially the spousal version where the wife won't talk until the husband apologizes or buys her something)
-you cannot yell
-you are glad that you didn't have to apologize for anything you shouldn't have said
-it's amazing how much more time you have to talk to the Lord
-"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it my minister grace unto the hearers." Eph 4:29
"My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer." Psalms 45:1
