Everybody QUIET!

All of our lives we are taught to speak (some of us catch on to this more readily than others). “Stand up straight and talk to the nice lady, dear.”

“Frederick, what do you say to Grandma?”

“Why don’t you go over and talk to that new girl in church, Cordelia.”

And in school…you can never just sit there. From the first bell till the teacher shoves you out the door at 3:00, you are kept busy answering questions, giving book reports, and fighting for the ball at recess.

As a mother, you are constantly moving your mouth.

“Yes, dear… we’ll read Little Bear in the Forest for the 64th time.”

“I said, ‘Shut the door.’ How many times do I have to say it? Are you listening to me?” “

No, honey—Mommy doesn’t want to know how that little rock got into the bottom of the Cheerios bag.”

I won’t even mention all the times we are able to jam our entire foot into our mouths with very little effort. (See—I’m not mentioning them).

No wonder it is next to impossible for some of us to be quiet….just….be…quiet…..(that’s better)……in the Lord’s presence, and let Him do the talking.

Habakkuk 2:20 But the Lord is in His holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before Him.”

Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.”

Try it some time. Now take that tape off your mouth.

Wash and Wear-y

Don’t take too long answering this (I know you probably have laundry to do).   If you could describe yourself as an article of clothing, what would you be?  A mink stole?  A cashmere sweater?  A silk blouse? (see previous blog).  Maybe some days you feel more like a worn-out t-shirt or a pair of dead socks.

While sorting clothes for laundering (yes, I actually do… sort of), I found this tag on the inside of a sweatshirt: “Designed and manufactured to withstand the tribulations of everyday wear.”  (It really did say it—I didn’t make it up just so I’d have something to write about).  The word tribulations popped out at me—more of a Bible word (hence this blog) than something found on dirty clothes.

How comforting to remember that, as the Lord’s children, we have His promises (2 Cor.4:16-18; 1Cor. 10:13 — there are more, too!) to help us keep on and endure the daily bleach applications, spin cycles, and wearing out of daily life.

I think I might be a taffeta dress.
